overview

Cape Town is renowned for its incredible natural beauty: rocky cliffs give way to the crashing Atlantic Ocean; an ancient mountain now peeks out of the sea as world-famous Robben Island, where global icon Nelson Mandela was held prisoner. And two of the best ways of appreciating these sensational vistas are by air and motorbike.

In this 4-day adventure, you will get to know a slice of the Mother City known to only a few others. Don your leathers (or not) and get comfortable on a Harley-Davidson for a cruise along what is arguably one of the most beautiful coastal roads in the world, from the centre of Cape Town, past the pristine beaches of Camps Bay, to the soaring and wending pass of Chapman’s Peak Drive.

Then take to the air in a powerful Robinson or Bell helicopter, flown by an experienced pilot who knows the vagaries of Cape Town’s weather, for the only chopper tour to circumnavigate Robben Island. Return along the Blouberg coastline – which is the epicentre of Cape Town’s kiteboarding community and is always dotted with high-speed colourful kites – for the classic view of Table Mountain; be sure to have your camera ready to get the shot of the planet’s most-photographed mountain!

Day to Day Itinerary

Day 1

Into the arms of the Mother City

The Twelve Apostles Hotel is named after the ‘corrugated’ mountain range on which it lies. Abutting Table Mountain and overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, the Twelve Apostles form a glorious backdrop to this luxurious hotel, which is situated beyond the hustle and bustle of the city centre but within easy driving distance of the Blue Flag beaches of Camps Bay and Clifton, and the entertainment-shopping-and-dining mega-hub of the V&A Waterfront.

After being transferred from Cape Town International Airport, check in and choose from equally attractive options to relax: take a drink on the seaside terrace and keep an eye out for dolphins; head to one of the private glass gazebos secluded in the middle of this historic property for a rejuvenating spa treatment; or stretch your legs with an easy and safe hike through the grounds on the lower slopes of the Twelve Apostles, which are covered with indigenous fynbos and protea bushes.

Day 2

Get your motor running...

Today you rev up the action with a trip along Chapman’s Peak Drive, undeniably one of the world’s most breath-taking coastal roads. Recalling the curves and cliffs of the Pacific Coast Highway, the south of France or even Italy, it has the benefit of being within an easy distance from the city centre.

‘Saddle up and take the reins’ if you are a confident and licensed rider or get comfortable in the pillion seat if you prefer to be able to just let the views and warm air wash over you. Then head out, making your way through vibrant Green Point, thread your way past the exclusive oceanside enclave of Camps Bay – with Lion’s Head peak looming above you – before hitting the open road to Hout Bay, a working harbour. From there, it is a short ride to Chapman’s Peak Drive.

Carved into the side of Chapman’s Peak, this is a ribbon of road that bends, curves and twists its way above the mighty Atlantic below. Navigate your way to Noordhoek – famous for its white-sand Long Beach and sun-bleached surfers – before heading back and experiencing another set of sensational views. Late afternoon is particularly thrilling as Cape Town is known for its awe-inspiring sunsets that paint the horizon the deep pinks, reds and golds of Africa while the twinkle of lights from seaside neighbourhoods start sparkling before you.

Day 3

Take to the sky

From the ground to the air: today you see Cape Town’s coast and Robben Island as only the seagulls do. Be transferred to the V&A Waterfront for your flight that circumnavigates this historical island and that gives you an unparalleled view of Table Mountain.

From the safety and comfort of a Robinson or Bell chopper, survey the water below for frolicking Cape fur seals, dusky dolphins and even enormous southern right whales from August to September. Then you are over Robben Island: once a leper colony and a prison for political activists, it is now a memorial to South Africa’s triumph over oppression and home to a thriving community. Translated as ‘Seal Island’ in Dutch, it is a flourishing wildlife population: spot springbok, ostriches, penguins and 73 other bird species on its shores.

Then whizz back across the sea to Bloubergstrand, which literally means ‘Blue Mountain Beach’. You will soon see why this name is apt: from here, Table Mountain and its two anchors – Devil’s Peak and Lion’s Head – appear to be a deep blue. Drawing closer and closer, you get a magnificent view of the harbour and city, which are embraced by the world’s most famous flat-topped sandstone rock.

Day 4

Explore some more...

Now that you have your bearings in Cape Town, delve deeper into the many exciting and interesting experiences South Africa’s oldest city has to offer. Unwind on the beach, head to the Winelands for taste some enticing vintages, climb Table Mountain or stock up on mementos at the V&A Waterfront before bidding Cape Town goodbye.
