overview

The extraordinary Masai Mara,  Africa's largest reserve, has long drawn travellers from far and wide, all searching for that special something that keeps them coming back – the spectacular migration of wildebeest herds, the wide-open spaces of big sky country, the roar of the lion or the glimpse of the elusive leopard.

Your 4-day stay shows you the best the reserve has to offer, up close and personal from your verandah or on game-viewing drives. The vastness of the Mara's plains and the abundance of its wildlife leave many at a loss for words but 'perfect freedom' often comes to mind. Grassy plains dotted with acacia trees and teaming with wildlife is the enduring image many have of Africa; in truth, they are thinking of the Masai Mara.

Old-style tented camps tip their hat to the romantic notion of going on safari but with an updated spin on luxury. Your home for four days is one of the most luxurious: the Governors' Camp. Almost a century ago this special hideaway was reserved exclusively for Kenya's colonial governors. It is a magical place nestled along the treed banks of the meandering Mara River, where the call of the wild is strong.

Day to Day Itinerary

Day 1

Into the Mara

You are welcomed to Kenya at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and seamlessly transferred to Wilson Airport for a light aircraft flight to the Mara, over the beautiful Great Rift Valley. Just 45 minutes later, you land in the reserve, possibly Africa's most famous and exhilarating wildlife park. Arriving in the magical Governors' Camp, there is time for lunch and a siesta before an afternoon game drive. This first, special day ends with swapping stories around the camp fire, a sumptuous dinner and a deep, well-earned sleep in Africa's wildest lands – secure in the knowledge that highly trained rangers are keeping watch. There are 37 luxury tents in Governors' Camp, right in the heart of the best game-viewing area of the Mara. Each has a private verandah, some with views across the sweeping plains; others look over the banks of the winding Mara River, where you may spot hippo and crocodile, or revel in bird watching. Here, the nights are lit by millions of stars and, at dawn, you feel the warm sunlight chase away sleep as it creeps across your tent.

Day 2-3

A wild love affair

For the next couple of days, you plunge into all that this beautiful and exciting landscape has to offer. Rise at dawn with a knock at the door and a fresh pot of fragrant coffee before heading out to see the Mara come to life for the day. Animals are at their most active during the cool periods of the day and sunrise is the perfect time to see them emerge from their overnight dens, drink at watering holes and, in the case of elephant families, engage in elaborate greeting rituals that include entangling their trunks with each other.

Brunch will be waiting for you when you return to Governors' and the midday heat is ideal for a refreshing siesta or catching up with that best-seller you have been meaning to get to. In the late afternoon, enjoy high tea before heading out once again to see the Big 5 as they emerge from the shadows. Sunsets in East Africa are astonshing - the sky is often deep crimson and the sun a perfect red disc - so make sure your camera batteries are charged!

Day 4

Good-bye Mara

Awakening on the fourth day, listen to the morning greetings. Take in an early game drive before another delicious camp breakfast. There is time for another late morning game drive before lunch and your transfer to the airstrip and return flight to Wilson Airport in Nairobi. A transfer takes you to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport as your flying safari comes to end. Buckling up in your airline seat, the memories of the past four days linger on.
