The bustling city of Nairobi is the gateway to some of the most unspoilt wilderness in the world. Before heading to the wild, spend a couple of nights at The Giraffe Manor and take the time to visit some of Kenya's leading conservation centres like the Daphne Sheldrick Centre where orphaned elephants are saved, and Giraffe Centre where giraffe find sanctuary.

And then, imagine an eco-chic villa open to the wide, wild world of the Samburu at Saruni Samburu. Picture dinner under the stars on your private verandah and your children learning about the ways of the warriors and guardians of the remote Kalama Community Wildlife Conservancy. Kalama is a crucial elephant migratory corridor and you can watch these great beasts lumber on their eternal quest for fresh grazing. After a hike up Mount Ololokwe, the Samburu's sacred mountain, wash off the dust of the rocky cliffs in one of two infinity pools.

More adventure beckons as you follow migratory wildebeest to the Masai Mara, where Saruni Mara welcomes you for four unforgettable nights. The villa has everything a traditional safari accommodation should have - and more. Besides unrivalled game viewing, there is a host of adventurous activities, from the Warriors Academy to summiting nearby Kilelioni. For those who welcome relaxation, there are the therapeutic pleasures the Masaai Wellbeing Space, before you return ‘home’ to your safari villa for a family feast at dinner time.

Day to Day Itinerary

Days 1-2

Experience Nairobi

The Giraffe Manor has been transformed into an interesting and comfortable boutique hotel. Spend two nights in one of the spacious rooms, which have all been been designed with complete comfort in mind. Situated in a landscaped garden, the highlight here is the herd of habituated Rothschild's giraffes that roam the grounds and are fond of popping their heads through the doors and windows of the dining room to pick up a few treats at breakfast time!

The city is home to what used to be Karen Blixen’s coffee farm (she wrote one of the continent's most iconic novels, Out of Africa) and to Nairobi National Park. The city centre is a unique destination caught between vibrant modern life and unspoilt wilderness, and has plenty of shopping opportunities.

There is plenty to do in Nairobi: make sure you take a walk to the Giraffe Centre, where you can feed giraffes, and visit the Daphne Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage. You can also visit the Karen Blixen Museum, stop in at the National Museum and Snake Park, or take a game drive through Nairobi National Park.

Days 3-5

Samburu sojourn

For the next three nights, the spectacular Saruni Samburu's luxury, eco-chic villas are your home. Open and spacious, they offer spectacular views over Kalama Community Wildlife Conservancy and Mount Kenya. Saruni Samburu is the only lodge in more than 800km2 of pristine wilderness that is chock-full of wildlife. And it is yours to explore exclusively, guided by Samburu warriors who are passionate about their land and culture. Kalama is also a crucial migratory corridor for large herds of elephants between the northern and southern conservation areas.

You stay in one of four family villas; there are six in total in the intimate camp. Each of the family rooms offer two separate en suite bedrooms joined by a spacious living room and private verandah. The bathrooms have bath tubs and outdoor showers, and the open verandah has a fireplace for the cool Samburu nights. Relax in one of the two infinity pools or enjoy a massage or treatment at the Samburu Wellbeing Space.

For action and adventure, take day game drives through the conservancy, Buffalo Springs National Park and Samburu National Park. Night drives are a special time in the Kalama Conservancy; they are not permitted in the national parks. Go on a guided bush walk with a Samburu warrior or on a culture visit to Kiltimany village. You can visit nearby caves with ancient rock art, and the Warriors Academy boasts child- and family-friendly courses in bush skills and animal tracking. Trek up Mount Ololokwe, the Samburu's sacred mountain, or enjoy helicopter or biplane flip from Mount Kenya to Lake Turkana.

Days 6-10

Migrate to the Mara

Your last stop is Saruni Mara, the only boutique lodge in the Masai Mara. It is intimate, with just five elegant cottages, one family villa and one private villa. The lodge is nestled in a secluded valley in the heart of Mara North Conservancy, an exclusive, private wildlife concession bordering the famed Masai Mara National Reserve.

During your four nights at Saruni Mara, Maasai warriors guide you throughout, sharing their ancient wisdom of the area and animals and their fascinating way of life.

Again, there is much to do: game drives in Mara North Conservancy, Masai Mara National Reserve and surrounding conservancies and night drives in Mara North Conservancy; guided bush walks through the forest and valleys around Saruni Mara; bird watching; a Warriors Academy with lessons in animal tracking; hiking up Kilelioni, the highest peak in the Mara-Serengeti ecosystem; cultural visits to the local Maasai Market; hot-air balloon flights at dawn; and bird watching. For those welcome moments of downtime, there are starlit dinners, sundowners amid the beauty and wonder of nature, and the Maasai Wellbeing Space for massage and treatments.

The Natural History Suite is perfect for families, boasting two en suite bedrooms, a spacious living area and a verandah. A selection of books will teach you more about the mammals, reptiles, trees and birds of the Mara. Samburu Mara is a slice of wild perfection.
