overview

Mobile camping is an exciting way for safari addicts to really feel part of the landscape and to immerse themselves in nature as much as possible. It is also a wonderful way of exploring a vast area – this 9-day expedition starts in Kasane and ends in Maun, taking in the wonders of the Okavango Delta, Moremi Game Reserve and Chobe National Park along the way.

You will move every two days, either by air or road, to a new location where a campsite will be set up and waiting for you. Staying in a basic but comfortable dome tent, you will be in constant touch with the sounds, smell and sights of Botswana. Dining takes place out of doors, as does showering under a bucket shower.

A highly trained and knowledgeable guide will accompany you all the way, and will ensure that you are prepared for the extra activities like a mokoro ride in the Delta and a river cruise in Chobe. Although you will not have amenities like air conditioning, a swimming pool or Wi-Fi, you will always have a flush toilet, a comfortable bed, delicious food and, of course, birds, bugs and game right on your doorstep.

Only six guests are accommodated in three tents, making this the ideal adventure to book out the entire camp on an exclusive-use basis.

Day to Day Itinerary

Days 1-2

Chobe National Park

After jetting into Kasane, you will be met at the airport by your guide who will accompany you throughout your trip.

You start your adventure with two nights in Botswana’s premier national park. Chobe is world renowned for its dense elephant population and, on a boating excursion on the river, you may be lucky enough to see a matriarchal herd cross from one side to the other, the youngsters being carefully guarded and helped across. An elephant mud bath will no doubt ensue – keep your camera at the ready!

Chobe is a land of acacia-dotted savannah and intense red sunsets. The iconic call of an African fish eagle will remind you periodically that you are in Africa, amid a plethora of exciting wildlife.

Days 3-4

The Savute Channel

Today you settle in for an extended game drive as you move from the Chobe River area to the famous Savute Channel. Here, you are bound to see tsessebe and kudu, as well as hundreds of birds including tawny eagles, vultures, kori bustards and giant eagle owls. The landscape is one of massive boulders and towering baobabs. Stop for photographs at a group of these ancient and massive trees, which can withstand being gouged by a hungry elephant, as well as at ancient Bushman rock paintings.

All channels in Botswana are ephemeral and depend on rainfall and the time of year: the Savute may be full to the brim or completely empty when you travel. Either makes for dramatic scenery and the strong lion prides in the area make the most of green-season babies and of animals not venturing far from the remaining waterholes in the dry season.

Days 5-6

Moremi Game Reserve

After a full English breakfast cooked on the open fire, it is time to head to the nearby airstrip for a short flight to a private concession in Moremi Game Reserve, one of the most spectacular parts of the Okavango Delta and a well-known site for spotting leopards and pack of playful wild dogs.

Again, you will spend two nights in camp, your guide taking your for extended game drives around the floodplains and lagoons in search of lions, zebra and cheetah. Because all the campsites are unfenced, you may have unexpected visitors – like inquisitive honey badgers – in camp at night.

Days 7-8

Nxabega Concession

It is onto another part of the Delta today - the beautiful Nxabega concession. The light aircraft will fly low over the Okavango from Moremi so keep an eye out for herds of elephants, buffalo and red lechwe grazing in the long grass, as well as flocks of heron and egrets flying below.

Within 30 minutes your pilot should be banking for the Nxabega airstrip where a 4x4 game drive vehicle will be waiting to take you to your camp. Nxabega means ‘Place of the Giraffe’ so lookout for these gentle creatures on your first game drive.

On your last days in the Delta, you will make the most of this wetland paradise with two water-based outings: a mokoro ride in a traditional dug-out canoe and a ride on a small motorised boat (water-level dependent). If your luck is in, you may encounter old elephant bulls eating soft grass while standing in the water, slaty egrets and goliath herons, perhaps a Pel’s fishing owl or sitatunga antelope or even a small pod of hippos. There are smaller creatures, too: painted reed frogs are less than an inch long and are best spotted on your mokoro trip.
