Botswana’s Okavango Delta has many islands amid its meandering waterways but none is larger than Chief’s Island, which lies in the Mombo concession of the Moremi Game Reserve. The ‘chief’ in question was Moremi himself, who ruled this predator-rich part of the Delta in centuries past. On this tour, his historic home base will be the final stop on your 7-day journey through Botswana.

Your sojourn begins on the doorstep of Chobe National Park, where you can enjoy finding the park’s renowned herds of elephants from the comfort of a 9-seater game-drive vehicle or a boat cruise along the Chobe River. Seeing a matriarchal herd cross the water and splash themselves thoroughly with mud is a highlight of any visit to Chobe.

The middle part of your holiday is spent in Moremi, a lush wildlife paradise where sightings of leopards, lions and hyenas are not uncommon. This trip is fully inclusive and suits travellers who have limited time available but who want to be able to see all Botswana’s highlights. This trip can be undertaken from and end in either Kasane or Maun, depending on the rest of your schedule.

Day to Day Itinerary

Days 1-3

On Chobe’s Doorstep

In either Kasane or Maun, you will be met for the drive to Chobe Bush Lodge, which is set just 150 metres from the Chobe River – the second-storey rooms all have exquisite views down to the water’s edge where you can watch for African fish eagles, hippos and elephants from the comfort and safety of your private balcony.

For your two days here, you will enjoy game drives, boat cruises and birding, all the while looking out for red lechwe, sable antelope, African wild dogs and apex predators like lion and leopard. In addition, the lodge has all the mod cons like air conditioning, Wi-Fi, a cocktail bar, babysitters and a swimming pool, making it ideal for families with children.

In the evenings, as dusk falls, enjoy an iced drink on one of the raised viewing decks that have beautiful views over Chobe – you may even hear lions calling to each other as evening approaches.

Days 3-5

Off to Moremi

After acclimatizing at Chobe, you will ready on Day 3 to make your way to the Okavango Delta’s pristine Moremi Game Reserve. Your accommodation here will be Pom Pom Camp, a traditional safari lodge with spacious tents and little extras like a private bathtub overlooking the Delta in the honeymoon tent – ideal for romantics or even for stealing some ‘me time’!

Moremi is famous for its leopard sightings and you and your guide will set out at dawn to track these gorgeous, lithe cats as they find their way back to tall trees to rest for the day. A major attraction at Pom Pom is the permission to conduct night drives and to go off-road, which means you can fall predator and prey alike from a respectable distance if they veer away from the main untarred road.

Days 5-7

Island life

Your holiday in Botswana ends on high point: two nights in the Delta paradise of Chief’s Island. The largest of all the Okavango’s myriad islands, it was once the home of the powerful Chief Moremi and is known for its superb game and plentiful birdlife.

Your home here will be Gunn’s Camp, which takes its inspiration from the safari camps of yesteryear. Constructed of thatch and timber with expansive viewing decks and wooden pathways, Gunn’s Camp has only six en suite tents, making for a very intimate, exclusive experience.

You will pass your days being poled along tranquilly on a mokoro, marvelling at birds like lilac-breasted rollers and carmine bee-eaters through your binoculars and photographing the sensational sunsets.

On the seventh day, it will be time to say ‘Tsamaya sentle’ to the wonderful staff at Gunn’s Camp and take your final game drive as you make your way back to Kasane or Maun for the next leg of your journey.
