On this exciting 4-day walking expedition you will explore wildlife-rich and uncrowded parts of the Okavango Delta with wildlife enthusiast, Andrew Harkness, as your expert private guide. Andrew has been guiding in Botswana since 2004 and has walked thousands of miles of the Delta on foot. His personal approach to guiding, vast knowledge, passion for the environment, and his excellent attention to detail will ensure that you have both an entertaining and enriching safari.

Walking safaris are possibly the best and most intimate way of encountering big game and they also allow you to really connect with nature by smelling, hearing and feeling its finer details. Great care is taken to avoid crowded areas so that you are able to experience the untouched wilderness of the Okavango Delta. And the best part: when you leave it is like you were never there! Each morning after you embark for another day of safari, the staff conscientiously pack up camp and relocate to the next beautiful overnight location on your trail.

Choose between Meru-style tents or smaller dome tents – both are fitted with comfortable stretcher beds and crisp white linen as well as en suite bathroom tents with a hot bucket-shower. The experience is limited to small groups, with the same friendly support team, including skilled safari chefs, accompanying you from when you land at Maun Airport until you depart.

Day to Day Itinerary

Day 1

Welcome to Botswana

At Maun Airport your expert guide, Andrew Harkness, will be waiting to personally greet and welcome you to Botswana. Once your bags have been loaded into the safari vehicle you will depart together on a scenic drive, passing rural villages and farming communities on your way to the first camping site. An inviting campfire, views of the nearby hippo lagoon and a 3-course meal await your arrival, and after dinner you can enjoy chatting to Andrew about the geology and history of the Okavango Delta. Retire to your comfortable tent for a hot bucket-shower and be sure to get a good nights’ rest for your first day walking through the Delta.

Day 2

Begin your walking safari

After a light breakfast of muffins, rusks, tea and coffee you will set off in the cool morning with your group, expert guide and a skilled tracker. You will look for fresh tracks made in the night and begin to follow them into the wilderness, keeping an eye open for commonly spotted wildlife like elephant, buffalo, lion, leopard, zebra, hippo and giraffe (your guides will keep you safe at all times during an encounter). Just from looking at spoor, your guides can make fascinating deductions about the behaviour of an animal – if it was alone, where it lay down, where it ate and much more. As the midday heat approaches you will stop for lunch under a giant ebony tree with bedrolls provided afterwards for those wanting to take a siesta. As the weather cools, your afternoon safari begins and, depending on sightings along the way, you will reach camp as the sun begins to set. Tonight you will be treated to a traditional barbeque before retiring under the stars, with a large mosquito net surrounding your bedroll in your tent.

Day 3

Continue exploring on foot

On the third day of your Delta walking safari you will follow a fresh set of big game spoor made during the night in order to track and approach some of Africa’s legendary wildlife on foot. Your guide will also point out nature’s smaller details and reveal facts about indigenous plants, flowers, insects and birdlife. Begin the return walk to base camp after lunch in the wilderness and a tranquil siesta in the shade. Once you arrive back at base camp you can spend the evening reliving the highlights of your walk, celebrating your journey, eating, drinking, and finally heading to your comfortable bed for the night.

Day 4

Return to Maun

Start the day with a laid-back, hearty breakfast and then embark on a final short walk or a mokoro trip on the nearby lagoon. You will depart on a safari vehicle back to Maun Airport, stopping to view any interesting wildlife spotted along the way.
