This comprehensive 8-day itinerary takes you through Tanzania's top three wildlife destinations - Lake Manyara, Ngorongoro Crater and the Serengeti - for a diverse big game safari, all with your own private guide and game-drive vehicle throughout. This means you can linger on sightings if you like, plan the day according to your own schedule, and have the freedom of having an experienced guide and 4x4 all to yourself.

Your safari kicks off in Arusha, gateway to Tanzania’s illustrious Northern Circuit. The first stop is a comfortable lodge that gives you access to the shores of Lake Manyara, home to flamingos and famous tree-climbing lions, or exceptional game viewing in Tarangire National Park.

Next, you explore the magnificent Ngorongoro Crater, one of the few places in Africa where it is likely that you will see all of the Big 5, including leopard, in a single day. Move on to the Serengeti where you could witness the Wildebeest Migration in season (approximately November to July). Depending on the time of year you visit, this grand finale of your safari adventure features dramatic interaction between mega herds of wildebeest and Africa’s apex predator, lions. Even out of the Migration season, the Serengeti consistently delivers world-class game viewing.

Day to Day Itinerary

Days 1-2

Lake Duluti in Arusha

You will be met on arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport and driven to the Lake Duluti Serena Hotel. Situated on the shores of Lake Duluti in the foothills of Mount Meru, this hotel is the perfect place to recuperate from a long-haul flight in anticipation of your forthcoming safari. Settle into your spacious suite before taking a stroll around the grounds to acclimatise to Africa – look out for some of the nearly 130 species of bird and the colobus monkeys that call Arusha home. Depending on your schedule, visit the markets of nearby Arusha to pick up authentic mementos of your trip, or simply relax in the gardens with a chilled drink. If you are feeling more active, paddle out onto the lake in a canoe or rent a mountain bike to explore the trails on Meru.

Days 2-4

Enjoy Manyara & Tarangire

Depart after breakfast for Maramboi Tented Camp, which has an enviable position between Lake Manyara and Tarangire National Park. Manyara is world-famous for it massive flock of pink flamingos and extraordinary prides of tree-climbing lions while Tarangire attracts plenty of game, especially after the rainy season when its many pans brim with life-sustaining water.

Because you have two nights at Maramboi and the exclusive services of your own guide and vehicle, you can decide when to visit Manyara or Tarangire – or both! – on morning and afternoon game drives, and exciting night drives. The camp is large (40 tented suites raised on stilts and connected by walkways) but has welcome conveniences like a swimming pool, Wi-Fi and mobile phone reception. You can also opt for cultural interactions with the nearby Datoga and Maasai communities.

Days 4-6

The Big 5 in Ngorongoro Crater

After an early breakfast, you depart on your drive to the Ngorongoro Crater, a long-extinct volcano that is considered one of the most spectacular wildlife destinations on Earth. Ngorongoro is home to thriving populations of elephant, rhino and rare black-maned lion, and it is not unusual to see all of the Big 5 in a single game drive.

Your home for two nights is the Farm House Valley Lodge in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. This contemporary 30-room lodge has views of the extinct Oldeani volcano as well as a sun-splashed swimming pool and a five-kilometre / three-mile running track. After returning from an evening game drive, warm up around the roaring boma fire.

Days 6-8

Life on the Serengeti

Another drive with your guide carries you from Ngorongoro to the Serengeti, a legendary reserve where the Wildebeest Migration plays out annually; this natural phenomenon sees over a million wildebeest, zebra and gazelle follow the summer rains in a vast circular migration. The mega herds must endure crossing rivers with strong currents and lurking crocodiles, all while keep their young safe from the magnificent lion prides – as well as hyenas, leopards and wild dogs - of the open plains. Your home for three nights is Serengeti Kati Kati Camp, a mobile camp with only 10 tents.

In addition to superb game viewing, including the Migration depending on when you visit, Kati Kati can also arrange excursions to the Olduvai Gorge Museum, which celebrates the archaeological discovery of some of the earliest hominids.

This trip is easily extended with a tropical island stay on Zanzibar or even the Seychelles.
