overview

By combining two of Botswana’s top safari destinations - the Moremi Game Reserve and the Makgadikgadi Pans – this 7-day fly-in safari delivers a comprehensive overview of Botswana’s abundant wildlife and diverse topography.

The two destinations represent totally different natural environments: your stay in Moremi puts you on the wooded floodplains of the Okavango Delta, which is home to elephants and buffalo and big cats. The Makgadikgadi Pans are part of the Kalahari Desert where that you will see desert-adapted wildlife as well as migrating zebra herds in summer, attracted to ephemeral rivers and fresh grazing.

You can also expect a wide variety of activities on this game-focused tour. There are morning and afternoon game drives but as your accommodation lies in private concessions, your guides can also conduct spot-lit night drives and nature walks. There is also an opportunity to take to the water by boat if river levels permit.

Accommodation takes the form of comfortable safari camps with tented suites as well as a night in a star-bed, a sleeping platform set out in the wilderness and your chance to spend a night under Africa’s starry night.

Itinerary Highlights

  • Diverse savannah & desert wildlife viewing
  • Regular elephant & predator sightings
  • Unique star-bed experience
  • Excellent bird watching & spot-lit hide
  • Chance to walk with San Bushman guides

Day to Day Itinerary

Days 1-3

A private Okavango retreat

Your safari begins at Botswana’s Maun Airport where you arrive and transfer to a scheduled light flight; your destination is Hyena Pan Tented Camp, an eight-suite camp set in a private concession adjoining the Moremi Game Reserve.

Protecting much of the Okavango Delta, Moremi is a rich tapestry of land and water habitats and home to large populations of big animals such as elephants, hippo, buffalo, giraffe and herds of antelope. It is also classic predator country: lion, leopard, cheetah, wild dog and crocodile are all sighted regularly and you enjoy morning and afternoon game drives in search of them. A private setting means night drives and game walks are possible in addition to classic game drives. In between safari activities you have a refreshing swimming pool to relax by.

The camp is solar-powered and has recharging points for batteries and Wi-Fi internet access in the main lounge. A highlight is its private waterhole, lit up at night for dramatic nocturnal wildlife sightings and complete with a ground-level hide for close-up animal and bird photography.

Day 4

A night under the stars

A short drive from Hyena Pan Tented Camp takes you into the Okavango’s drier mopane forest for an unforgettable fourth night on safari. Overlooking a well-frequented waterhole, your star-bed is an elevated, double-storey sleeping platform sitting well above the ground. Your bathroom is on the lower floor and your bedroom lies under the stars on the upper deck, swathed in netting and with views over the waterhole. Your guide is on hand, and serves dinner at the campfire after which you have the night-time sights and sounds of Africa all to yourself.

Days 5-6

A Kalahari river

After breakfast you transfer back to the bush airstrip for the flight back to Maun Airport and a vehicle transfer into the Kalahari Desert and Meno a Kwena Tented Camp, a nine-suite camp with an enviable location. Set on the Boteti River, Meno a Kwena overlooks a vital water supply for desert wildlife as well as an important staging post for herds of migrating zebras in summer, passing through the area on their way to the grasslands of the Makgadikgadi Pans.

Game drives in the Makgadikgadi Pans National Park are offered as well as drives in the immediate area where there are often large herds of zebra and wildebeest as well as their predators – lions, cheetahs and wild dogs. Other activities include bird watching (highly recommended in summer), quad-bike (ATV) adventures on the salt pans, cultural tours of a local village, and exciting bush walks with experienced San Bushman trackers and guides.

The camp is solar-powered and comes complete with pool, bar and viewing decks overlooking the Boteti River. Your suite also has views over the river as well as an en suite bathroom with twin basins, a flush toilet and a traditional safari bucket-shower.

Day 7

The Journey Ends

After breakfast at Meno a Kwena you transfer back to Maun by road, arriving at the airport in plenty of time for your onward flight or overnight accommodation.
