Botswana is truly an undiscovered wonderland that incorporates woodland, rivers, lagoons, floodplains, savannahs and dense thickets. On this 9-day adventure, you will travel to one of the best private concessions falling within the Okavango Delta ecosystem, the Khwai, and then move to the little-explored Makgadikgadi Pans.

In these remote and pristine regions, you will not be distracted by mobile reception or even Wi-Fi. Instead, discover the thrill of African adventure, wildlife tracking and exploration all while making meaningful connections with your world-class safari guides and the local people, many of whom you will encounter at your very comfortable tented camps.

Each private tent is fully furnished and features a private viewing deck and an en suite bathroom. Your safari will be packed with little extra luxuries like soft linen and fine wine but the biggest luxury of all is the privately guided and personalised experience – made a reality by some of the best safari guides and hosts in Botswana.

Day to Day Itinerary

Day 1-3

Explore the private Khwai Concession

From Maun International Airport, you will fly to Khwai Airstrip where a warm welcome awaits you. Transfer with your driver to Hyena Pan Tented Camp and keep your eyes open for wildlife along the way. Khwai is a private concession sharing unfenced borders with flagship wilderness regions including Chobe National Park and Moremi Game Reserve. You have exclusive access to the concession and can enjoy additional activities such as night drives, off-road driving and guided nature walks which are not permitted elsewhere.

Hyena Pan Tented Camp is small and exclusive, and with just eight suites it offers a highly personalised experience. The lodge is located under a canopy of mopane trees and overlooks a natural pan – an important water source that attracts wildlife throughout the year, especially hippo, elephant and buffalo when water levels are higher after the summer rains. Predators in the area include leopard, wild dog, lion and spotted hyena which you can track on game drives or thrilling guided nature walks.

Day 3-4

A night under the stars

Top your stay in the Khwai Concession with an authentic and romantic night under the African skies. The Skybeds at Hyena Pan Tented Camp will have you truly immersed in the African wilderness, with not a manmade sound or structure (other than your comfortable open-air bedroom) in sight. After a day of safari activities, you will be transferred to the ‘skybed’ for sundowners, followed by a delicious starlit meal. The raised semi-thatched platform is equipped with twin beds with mosquito netting and discreet ablution facilities. Your dreamy night out in the wild will be interrupted only by hooting owls, grazing hippos and the distant calls of nocturnal animals.

Day 4-7

Water-based safaris

After a memorable night, you will be collected from your skybed and transferred to Sable Alley. This comfortable tented camp overlooks a lagoon and has an enviable position where animals often pass through to drink or visit the nearby river. The area comprises mopane woodland, and the riverine floodplains around the lodge are excellent hunting ground for predators.

Spend your days enjoying game drives and mokoro safaris (a traditional canoe ‘poled’ along the water by your guide and excellent for birding). When water levels permit, motorboating is a fun way to travel further afield and see wildlife from the water. You can also leave the private Khwai Concession with your guide and enter Moremi Game Reserve for a day safari.

Day 7-9

Unique desert wildlife

After two nights at Sable Alley, you will board a light aircraft to Maun International Airport and then fly on to the Makgadikgadi Pans, which are roughly halfway between the Delta and the Central Kalahari Desert. The change of scenery offers unique game viewing and some interesting new activities to complement your traditional Botswana safari at the Khwai Concession.

Your lodge, Meno-A-Kwena Tented Camp, is located at the only source of permanent water in the area – the Boteti River – which is popular with resident wildlife and migrating herds (including the annual zebra migration from roughly May to November). Each of the nine tented suites has a private veranda overlooking the river.

The area is home to rare desert antelope as well as white rhino, lion, leopard, cheetah, wild dog, jackal and more. Enjoy day trips into the Makgadikgadi and Nxai Pans National Parks, guided walking excursions with San Bushmen, game viewing from a floating hide, sunset and game viewing cruises, and perhaps even another sleep-out under the stars.
