Day to Day Itinerary

Day 1

The Smoke that Thunders

Meet your guide on arrival at Zambia's Livingstone International Airport and enjoy a tour of Victoria Falls, one of the Natural Wonders of the World. The mighty Zambezi River pours over a mile-wide drop in a dramatic display of noise and spray, known locally as 'The Smoke that Thunders’. In full flow, the billowing spray from the Falls is visible for miles around, accompanied by its deep, steady rumble.

An upstream journey takes you to Toka Leya, a contemporary tented camp set on the bank of the Zambezi. Built on raised wooden walkways, the camp and its tented suites have great views of the river. Sit back and watch the resident wildlife - grazing warthogs and ear-twitching impala - from your private deck before relaxing at the fireside to share your first impressions of Africa with your fellow travellers.

Days 2-4

A Linyanti adventure

After breakfast, head back to Livingstone Airport for a short flight to Kasane in Botswana. Gateway to the legendary Chobe National Park, Kasane is the launch site for your boat cruise on the Chobe River. This is the best way to observe the herds of antelope and elephants that drink, bathe and romp at the water’s edge. Crocodiles and pods of snorting hippos wallow along the riverbanks, rare Chobe bushbuck peek through the thick undergrowth and the birdlife is prolific – from jewel-like kingfishers to the fierce-eyed African fish eagle.

You return to the airport to board a flight to northern Botswana's remote wilderness, the exclusive Linyanti Concession. A game drive takes you from the landing strip to Linyanti Tented Camp, set in a forest overlooking the Linyanti River. Breathe in the scent of canvas and wood smoke - this intimate tented camp makes you feel like an early explorer discovering these wild wetlands for the first time.

Game drives are the main focus here. The Linyanti floodplains teem with wildlife ranging from antelope, zebra and giraffe to huge rumbling herds of buffalo and elephant, especially in the dry season. Beyond the water, the open woodlands are home to a huge variety of species; top predators include lion, cheetah and leopard. You may also encounter the highly endangered African wild dog, a species famous for living in one of the most tightly knit and caring societies among all social animals. Often seen in the Linyanti, they are skillful hunters: the thrill of watching a pack’s sophisticated teamwork as they hunt is something you are unlikely to ever forget.

Two more days of Linyanti adventures lie before you, unfolding between the relaxed hospitality of the camp: warm service and delicious home-style cooking, the spectacular starry night skies and comfortable beds.

Days 5-7

Kalahari jewel

A light aircraft whisks you southward after breakfast where your safari into the great Okavango Delta begins. From the air, you see the Linyanti River disappearing behind you as a vast expanse of dry woodland opens out below. Ahead, you make out a shimmering green horizon and sunlight flashing across open stretches of water. The Delta gradually fills the view as you descend towards its south-eastern corner to Gomoti Tented Camp in the Santawini Concession. Designed to echo the days of the early explorers but with all the mod cons - including en suite bathrooms with toilets and showers - Gomoti has just five large tents to accommodate eight guests.

Buffalo, elephant, roan and sable antelope join red lechwe and impala herds on the floodplains, ever wary of predators lurking in the forest fringes. Santawini is excellent territory for encountering big cats, hyenas and wild dogs. Its private setting means that you enjoy night drives and guided nature walks in addition to game drives.

Days 8-10

Delta dreaming

After breakfast, a short, scenic flight carries you from the delta’s eastern fringe to its western wetlands. Accommodation for the next three nights is at either Jacana or Xigera Camp, both of which are permanent tented camps located on delta islands. These islands are ideal bases from which to explore the deeper waterways in search of species you have not yet encountered. Top of the 'must-see' list are the elusive aquatic sitatunga antelope and Pel’s fishing-owl, but this lush haven enjoys a wide range of visiting wildlife, including hippo and elephants.

Most of the Okavango Delta is subject to the seasonal ebb and flow of water but this is deep delta with permanent labyrinthine waterways that can only be explored by motorboat or mokoro (a traditional canoe). A poler guides your mokoro silently along crystal-clear waters edged with ferns and water lilies while you keep a sharp lookout for wildlife both great and small - from tiny speckled reed frogs to elegant jacanas walking on lily pads, to the enormous bulk of an elephant crossing a channel. The myriad of forested islands in this region are best explored guided nature walks and offer one of the best bird watching experiences in the Okavango Delta.

Day 11

Farewell to Africa

Say farewell to the peaceful waterways on your last mokoro excursion, accompanied by birdsong and the soft gurgle of flowing water. Stop in a field of floating lily pads for a last admiring gaze at this wetland wonder. After a leisurely brunch at camp, a light aircraft takes you to Maun Airport to begin your journey home. As you fly over the pristine mosaic of wetlands and islands below, you recall the memorable moments of your safari: the thundering waters of Victoria Falls, the thrill of wild dogs on the move, and the call of a fish eagle gliding over the Okavango Delta.

Back home in the humdrum of daily life, you close your eyes and replay the sights and sounds of Africa: feel the sun on your skin and the tingle of adventure in your heart.
