In the past the threat of malaria has kept many travellers from visiting Africa on a safari but now the opportunity exists for these travellers to experience the African bush without having to worry about malaria and preventative medication.

South Africa offers malaria-free game reserves where the big game of African legend can be viewed.

The reserves of the Eastern Cape Province including Shamwari or Kwandwe and Madikwe Game Reserve in the North-West Province boast everything that traditional game areas offer such as big game and luxury accommodation.

Ideal for family holidays, in particular families with small children, malaria-free reserves offer visitors peace of mind without compromising the experience of a wildlife safari.

What makes Madikwe and the Eastern Cape reserves even more attractive is the fact that they are ideally situated for the self-drive traveller where the game experience can be combined with other attractions of South Africa.

We recommend:

Madikwe Game Reserve Once one of South Africa's best kept secrets Madikwe is fast becoming one of the country's most sought-after destinations. It's one of South Africa's largest game reserves and is made up of a number of vegetation zones.

The largest single translocation of game occurred at Madikwe in the 1990's when 12 000 animals of a variety of species were introduced into this area of degraded farmland. Madikwe today is a fully operational eco-system playing host to a number of luxury lodges and can be accessed on a self-drive holiday or fly-in from Johannesburg.

Eastern Cape Game Reserves Not regarded as a major tourist destination in the past, the Eastern Cape is actually where the malaria-free safari concept was born and today the province boasts a number of excellent game reserves providing memorable big game experiences.

Historically the area was one of the finest game areas in Africa before the arrival of the settlers more than 200 years ago. The settlers began to clear the land for farming by destroying the wildlife resulting in the extinction of many species from the area.

There was a period of more than 150 years where the sound of a lion's roar was not heard in the valleys of the Eastern Cape, a silence broken when lions were released on Shamwari Game Reserve some seven years ago.

The Eastern Cape is perfectly situated to combine a Garden Route Self-drive Safari with big game. Luxury lodges ranging in price provide for all tastes and budgets.
