Starting your journey in Kampala, you leave this lush valley, crossing the equator to explore the forests of Uganda or Rwanda. Gorilla tracking in the Parc de Volcans or Bwindi National Park is a life long dream for many and a truly unforgettable safari experience. Once found you can spend time sitting quietly within meters of these magnificent, endangered creatures. A visit to the gorillas will help ensure their continued survival in their natural habitat.
- Day 2: Kisoro
- Itinerary
From our Kisoro base, depending on permit availability and where the gorillas are located, you will head to either the Magahinga or Bwindi National Parks, the Virunga National Park or Ruhengeri. Visas to the DRC and Rwanda can be obtained at the border. The gorilla families have been habituated to people and their whereabouts are monitored daily by the guides and park officials. However, it may still be necessary to trek for quite a while through the dense rain forest vegetation (up to 5 hr) in order to reach the family designated for your visit.
The mountain gorilla is one of our closest living relatives, yet ironically it is mankind who poses the greatest threat to its survival. Costs to trek the gorillas differ from park to park and currently ranges from US$300 to US$500, per 1-hour viewing (though do note that Go2Africa is not in control of the price and therefore connot be held responsible for any increases in fees). Your fees help to set up and finance patrols that are instrumental in protecting the gorillas from poachers and their lethal snares.
Only about 600 of these magnificent animals remain and watching gorillas in their own surroundings is an experience you're sure never to forget. Although we have a very high success rate, viewing cannot be guatanteed. If unsuccesful, the National Parks authorities usually allow you a 2nd chance the next day, but this is purely at their discretion.
- Day 3: Lake Bunyoni
- Itinerary
A short drive through picturesque scenery brings you to Lake Bunyoni. Lake Bunyoni is the deepest crater lake in Africa, and is home to a large number of bird and fish species, as well as otters. You spend the night at the lake.
- Day 4: Lake Bunyoni
- Itinerary
After your energetic trekking you can enjoy a whole day at leisure, surrounded by the beauty of Lake Bunyoni. You may wish to go swimming, visit the local villages or just sit back, relax and appreciate your tranquil surroundings. Enjoy your well deserved rest day!
- Day 5: Kampala
- Itinerary
After enjoying the peaceful surrounds of Lake Bunyoni you drive to Kampala, crossing the equator for the 2nd time. Stop for a photo of you standing in both hemispheres. Your trip comes to an end once you arrive back at your accommodation. You overnight in Kampala, with the opportunity to sample Uganda's nightlife.
