On the shores of Lake Victoria and boasting the source of the Nile, is Jinja, eastern Uganda's adventure capital, a burgeoning Victoria Falls.
This is the place for some serious grade four and five white-water rafting, kayaking and even river boarding (careering down the river on a boogie board).
If that's not enough you can rip it up with some quad biking or throw yourself off a bridge on a 44-metre bungee jump.
For those who want some hard-core hiking, head for the Mount Elgon National Park on the eastern border with Kenya, which offers excellent trekking as well as some serious guided mountaineering up Mt Elgon.
It normally takes between three and five days to hike to the top - December to March are the best months to go, with June to October being the wettest.
This area is a more budget-conscious alternative to the western hiking regions of the Rwenzoris or Virungas ranges.
Head for the former from December to February, and again from June to August when conditions are best (less rain!) and allow about a week for a standard trek - some climbing experience is advisable if you want to tackle the peaks.
Trekking in the volcanic range of the Virungas is done in the Mgahinga National Park - there is also caving and birding.
