Essentially an undulating, raised plateau lying between two mountainous branches of the Great Rift Valley, Uganda is a well watered, fertile country with nearly 25 percent of its surface area taken up by freshwater lakes and rivers.
It's scarcely surprising then that Uganda's parks and reserves once ranked among Africa's best, until the horrors of post-colonial political mayhem reduced the country to penury and the parks to mass killing fields.
The situation has improved vastly and the Ugandan environment - and its wildlife - is well on the road to recovery.
