Uganda's wildlife took a pounding during the dark years of dictators and Tanzanian occupation. The good news is that resilient Mother Nature is bouncing back and Uganda's Big Game is well on the road to recovery.
Queen Elizabeth National Park offers Uganda's greatest variety of wildlife: look for elephants, buffaloes, hippos, lions (including the famous tree-climbing ones) and leopards together with a good variety of antelope.
Chimpanzees can be seen in the more forested areas and the birding is sublime. Book in advance for specialist bird walks or drives and finish the day with a superb river cruise from Mweya Lodge on the Kazinga Channel.
The Murchison Falls National Park is Uganda's largest protected area and is recovering fast. It's a good place to view elephant, buffalo, giraffe, hyena and lion while the Nile (pouring through a six-metre gap - hence the Falls) is packed with hippo and crocodile.
For those who want to spot primates, 11 species can be found in the Kibale Forest National Park. If you're lucky, you may see the ever-elusive forest elephants, recently upgraded to a separate species from the African elephant.
Lake Mburo National Park, located in the south of Uganda, is good for zebra and many species of antelope. It's an ideal stopover when travelling the long road between Kampala and Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park.
You can also do walking trails with an armed ranger, as well as game drives and boat trips. There is a small stand of forest which provides great birding.
