Acceptably safe travel has been part of Ugandan tourism since the country's return to normality under President Museveni and it is a place that is regularly lauded as one with a low crime rate.
The country does, however, lie in the centre of a troubled region and has unpredictable neighbours such as the DRC and Sudan. It would be highly advisable to stay away from the far north where Uganda borders Sudan.
Indeed, there is little reason to venture north of the cities of Lira and Gulu and the north-west region is the haunt of the bizarre but dangerous, Lord's Resistance Army, where the authorities will probably prevent you from foolishly venturing.
The western frontier with the DRC and Rwanda is one where the security has been an issue, but has recently become far safer and the gorilla trekking industry is back to full capacity.
Kampala is one of Africa's safest big cities - having said that, it is still a big city so take all the normal precautions in terms of your money and valuables.
