Fertile soils and a tropical climate mean that Uganda is prime real estate for a huge range of animals.

Most famous for its population of mountain gorillas, Uganda is home to around 20 species of primate.

Chimpanzees (more closely related to man than any other animal) and monkeys ranging from the bulky baboon to the agile colobus are found in many of Uganda's protected areas.

Large mammals typical of the African savannah - elephant, buffalo, hippo, giraffe, lion, hyena and leopard - are found in the larger parks while some 30 antelope species - their range dictated by habitat - have been recorded on the Uganda wildlife list.

The usual reptiles are represented: big crocodiles in the Nile at Murchison Falls, lurking monitor lizards, snakes and chameleons, but what gets naturalists excited are the astonishing number of butterflies.

Some 1 200 species have been recorded, including 50 endemics - compare this total to Britain's paltry 56.

The forests of Uganda are particularly good, some boasting over 300 species.
