The soulful eyes of a mountain gorilla stand out on every Ugandan tourist brochure but gorilla trekking aside, there is far more to Uganda's environment than that, as our Uganda Wildlife Guide makes clear.

The country's national parks and reserves include some incredibly varied habitats: lowland forest, wooded savannahs, montane rainforest and lakes, all of which adds up to an almost overwhelming birdlife (arguably making Uganda one of the world's best bird watching destinations) and a decent cast of mammals too - check out our wildlife page for more information.

As you can imagine, Uganda's position on the Equator means wall-to-wall greenery and its vegetation varies from steaming tropical rainforests to icy mountainous moorland.

Happily, after years of neglect, Uganda's conservation bodies are back on track as the country regains its reputation as a top wildlife destination - after all, there aren't many countries where you can see gorillas, chimps, lions and elephants all in the space of a few days.

"The hours before are pressure-filled but the thrill of your first eyeball-to-eyeball encounter is hard to beat. She sat, entranced, for an hour with a 29-strong gorilla family watching them feed, sunbathe and generally laze around like Brits on the beach...." - Dominic Chadbon, 'Gorillas & Chimps in Uganda', October, 2008.
