Entebbe is a small, pretty town near the shore of Lake Victoria. In 1913 it was described as "the prettiest and most charming town of the lake," a description that still holds true today. Entebbe is a deeply relaxed settlement that spreads out along the lakeshore, where no more activity occurs than is absolutely necessary.
For anyone interested in natural history Entebbe may be preferable to Kampala as an introduction to Rwanda. Its botanical garden makes it worth a visit even if you're staying in the capital; they teem with birds and you're pretty much guaranteed to see colobus monkeys up close and personal.
Entebbe is also the site of Uganda's only international airport. This was the scene of a dramatic airplane hostage rescue by Israeli commandos in 1976, probably the most famous event in the town's history.
