Mbarara is Uganda's most up-and-coming town. Before the mid-1990s it was a one-horse town choking on its own dust, but lately it's gone through an amazing metamorphosis. It still bears the scars of Tanzania's invasion during Amin's dubious presidency, but its the only town in the west of the country that could be called vibrant and forward-moving in total sincerity.
Despite its recent blossoming, Mbarara is sadly lacking in tourist attractions: it has a range of hotels, but little reason to fill them. Its recent dynamism may be attractive enough for some travellers, but it will have to expand its repertoire of attractions if it's to draw travellers for many other purposes than business trips.
