Ngamba is a forested 50 hectare island located in the north of Lake Victoria. The island is Uganda's newest sanctuary for orphaned and rescued chimpanzees
Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary was established in 1998 when 19 orphaned chimps were relocated here. The Sanctuary now provides a home to almost 40.
Cut by an apartheid-style electric fence the island is divided into two unequal parts. Chimps go to the one side, people go to the other. The rainforest environment is perfect for the chimps, and they are free to roam their side of the island.
There are a number of guest activities available. These include: close-viewing the chimps at feeding time, one hour walks through the forest habitat with infant chimpanzees, and overnight stays in the forest.
