Located in East Africa, the Virungas are a chain of volcanoes straddling the borders of Rwanda, the DRC, and Uganda.
Of the eight volcanoes, two are still active, both of which are situated in the Congo. These erupted as recently as 2002 and are considered highly active. The six dormant volcanoes are home to the critically endangered Mountain Gorilla. Half of the worlds remaining population live is these mountains, (although they are mainly concentrated within the Rwandan park).
The endangered golden monkey is also protected within this area, as are old populations of elephant and buffalo. All three countries have national parks in the Virungas. Visiting this area you're probably better off basing yourself in Rwanda. The DRC is unsafe and the Ugandan Park, although lovely, is the least likely to offer you encounters with Mountain Gorillas.
