Cape Town's new stadium is an architectural feat with wave-like lines and a glass panel roof. But probably its most impressive feature is its location; set against the backdrop of Table Mountain on Green Point Common, overlooking the ocean and Robben Island.
The old Green Point Stadium was completely demolished, and construction of the new stadium began in March 2007. This world cup stadium was completed in December 2009, at a total cost of around R4.5 billion.
The new Cape Town Stadium has been specially designed to reduce the impact of the notoriously strong Cape Town winds. The translucent roof will let through light on sunny days, while the facade is covered with a stretched fibre-glass mesh that plays with the natural light.
During the planning stage, the stadium was referred to as the African Renaissance Stadium then Green Point Stadium before simply being called Cape Town Stadium. Some locals were not too happy about the construction of a 15-storey building in central suburb of Green Point, however, now most agree that this beautiful stadium is a welcome addition to Cape Town's skyline.
Cape Town Stadium will host: an opening match, 5 more first-round matches, 1 second-round match, a quarter-final and a semi-final of the 2010 Football World Cup.
