The Moses Mabhida Stadium is located in Durban, a city known for its golden beaches and clear warm sea.
The three-tiered stadium will have a seating capacity of 70, 000 for the 2010 Football World Cup, but has been specifically designed with the option of being scaled down to 54,000 for later local matches.
The most striking feature of this World Cup stadium is its grand central arch. Visitors will be able to catch a cable car up to the 106m apex of the arch, to admire Durban's ocean and city views.
Construction of the Moses Mabhida Stadium began in late 2006, and is scheduled for completion in October 2009. The surrounding area will also have restaurants, shops, children's play areas and a walkway linking the stadium complex to the beach.
At the planning stage, the stadium was to be called King Senzangakhona Stadium, but this was changed to Moses Mabhida Stadium. Moses MnCane Mabhida was a founding member of the South African Congress of Trade Unions (SACTU), and is a hero of the working class.
Durban has a long footballing history. The new Moses Mabhida Stadium is being built on the grounds of the old Kings Park stadium, which hosted Bafana Bafana's first ever match in July 1992 (in which they beat Cameroon 1-0). South Africa also played a friendly here against England in May 2003, to celebrate the international launch of South Africa's 2010 FIFA World Cup bid.
Moses Mabhida Stadium will host: 5 first-round matches, 1 second-round match and a semi-final of the 2010 Football World Cup.
