Nelspruit is celebrating the construction of a long overdue top class sports venue, the first international sporting stadium in the Mpumalanga Province.
Mbombela Stadium is being built just outside the town of Nelspruit , about 330 km east of Johannesburg, and conveniently close to the Kruger National Park.
The stadium was designed by South African architects. As it is the only World Cup stadium in an area of bushveld, it's known as South Africa's 'wild' stadium, a theme which is reflected in the distinctive giraffe-shaped roof supports and zebra-style seating.
Construction began in February 2007, and will cost an estimated R920 million. The three tiered stadium has a rounded, rectangular shape, to ensure every seat is as close as practically possible to the action on the field.
Mbombela Stadium is a multi-purpose venue, after the 2010 World Cup tournament it will be able to host rugby games, football matches and concerts. The surrounding complex will house hockey fields, a gymnasium, shops and conference and wedding facilities.
The name 'Mbombela' is siSwati word which means 'many people together in a small space'.
Mbombela Stadium will host: 4 first-round matches of the 2010 Football World Cup.
