Soccer City, South Africa's premiere stadium, will be the main venue for the 2010 FIFA World Cup™ hosting both the opening and final matches. The stadium is in Johannesburg, on the outskirts of the football-mad township of Soweto.
Soccer City, formally known as FNB Stadium, has undergone a major upgrade, from a seating capacity of 80,000 to 94,700. On completion it will be by far the biggest stadium in Africa. Construction started early in 2007, and the stadium should be completed in October 2009, at a total cost of close to R3 billion.
The new design of the outer part of Soccer City is based on the calabash or African cooking pot. Significant changes to the interior include the extension of the upper tier, and the addition of an encircling roof.
South Africa's national stadium has played host to some of the most memorable matches in the country's soccer history, including a thrilling match in February 1996, when Bafana Bafana beat Tunisia in the final of the African Cup of Nations.
Soccer City will host: the opening match, 4 more first-round matches, 1 second-round match, a quarter-final and, of course, the 2010 World Cup final.
