The South Luangwa National Park is an immense wildlife reserve with an abundance of game including huge herds of elephant, lion, the endemic Thornicroft's giraffe and over 400 species of birds.
South Luangwa is also the home of walking safaris. Discover the freedom of leaving the beaten track far behind and walking between remote bushcamps; surrounded by the sights, sounds and smells of the untouched African bush.
Walking safaris can be done by anyone of average fitness, between the age of 12 and 80 years old. You walk at a leisurely pace; stopping every now and then as your experienced and knowledgeable guide shares fascinating insights into the park's varied inhabitants - both great and small.
We can also tailormake South Luangwa walking safaris which combine bush walks and game drives, giving you a true taste of this remote and beautiful wilderness area.
Norman Carr started his exploration of the South Luangwa Valley in the 1930s. A legend in the Zambian safari industry, Norman Carr raised 2 orphaned lion cubs - living with them and teaching them to hunt. This incredible story has been documented in the book and subsequent film "Return to the Wild".
In the 1950s Norman Carr pioneered walking safaris in the South Luangwa. Today you can still have this thrilling experience but with a lot more creature comforts; staying at one of Norman Carr's original safari camps, Kapani Lodge, then walking to bushcamps like Luwi and Mchenja, in prime locations close to waterholes or rivers.
Robin Pope has also really helped grow the popularity of walking safaris in Zambia. Having grown up in the Zambian bush, Robin Pope began guiding in the 1970s. His reputation grew in the 1980s while managing Nsefu, and during this time he also opened Tena Tena fly camp in order to lead 3-day walking safaris.
With his incredible knowledge and enthusiasm for the South Luangwa, Robin Pope and his team of exceptional guides continue to lead walking safaris, like the Classic Zambia Walking Safari which combines game drives and lodges with 4 days of walking; staying at comfortable mobile camps.
