Like many African countries, Zambia has had a varied and turbulent history, yet through it all has managed to retain a strong sense of identity, and its people are well known for their friendliness and welcoming spirit.

Zambia's major drawcards are remote game-packed parks and reserves and that Natural Wonder of the World: Victoria Falls. Most visitors don't spend much (if any) time in Zambia's towns and cities, which have few tourist attractions.

For a taste of local culture, rather visit places of interest like the Kawazu Cultural Village or stop in at Tribal Textiles, a community initiative near Mfuwe which employs around 100 people and produces unique, hand-printed crafts.

Have a look at our Zambia travel guide for more background information on this beautiful country, its economy and its people.

On the way to the river, one of the rafting guides showed me a walking stick he had carved. Intricate and delicate, it was of an impressively fanged serpent rising out of a whirlpool. It was the spirit-god of the Zambezi, the Nyaminyami. The Nyaminyami is believed by the Tonga to control all life in the Zambezi. - Alison Westwood, 'Meeting the Great Zambezi'.
