Zambia is known as the wild heart of Africa. Visitors come to this untamed country to experience world-class safaris in remote parks and reserves or marvel at the raw power of Victoria Falls.

Just because it's wild though, don't think you have to rough it. Tucked away in the Lower Zambezi, Kafue National Park, and the South Luangwa are intimate, owner-run camps in locations known for an abundance of big game.

Having said that, we'd also highly recommend leaving your luxurious lodge for a couple of days, and venturing out on a walking safari. This top experience will give you a true appreciation of these remarkable wilderness areas.

For more inspiration on what to see and do in Zambia, read through our activities pages which has something for everyone: from a peaceful paddle down the Zambezi, to heart-stopping flights over Victoria Falls.

The South Luangwa is also the birthplace of walking safaris. Initially, walking through big cat country may seem like a bad idea, but this is when the valley's best qualities really shine through. Focus on the smaller things, and the bush reveals itself in a way you just can't appreciate from the back seat of a safari vehicle. - Sandra Mallinson, Off the Beaten Track in Africa, August 2008.
