Sixty four kilometres west of Ndola is Kitwe, another city which owes its existence to copper mining. Like most of the copperbelt towns it relies for its prosperity on copper and has had to find income from secondary industries since the crash in copper prices.
Kitwe is not a tourist town but it has some pleasant scenery and there are two major rivers in the area. It is also possible to visit the mines and take a tour down one of the shafts.
With the privatisation of the Nkana copper mine, the city is anticipating a steady rise in its fortunes.
