A southern extension of the Great Rift Valley, the broad Luangwa Valley is located in the northeastern parts of Zambia and is home to two of Africa's finest game reserves - North Luangwa National Park and South Luangwa National Park.
The valley is divided by the Luangwa River, one of the major tributaries of the Zambezi River. It floods in the rainy season (December through March) and shrinks dramatically in the dry season, even drying up completely in some of its upper reaches.
