Luapula Province » Luapula province

Located in the northern reaches of Zambia, Luapula is one of the country's nine provinces. The province was named after the Luapula River and extends along the river from the large and shallow Lake Bangweulu to Lake Mweru with its many fishing villages.

The province has been the subject of the Luapula Province border dispute - a territorial argument regarding Zambia's northern border dating back to 1894. What was once a boundary dispute between Belgium and Britain has become a violent problem passed on to the DRC and Zambia.

Fishing is the major economic activity in the region.
