Travellers' main reason for visiting the southwest of Zambia is usually to see the Ngonye Falls. These majestic falls are situated just outside Sioma Village and the Sioma Ngwezi National Park. They are second only to the Victoria Falls for the sheer volume of water pouring over the half-moon-shaped cascades.
An interesting and strange feature of the Ngonye Falls is that the water runs underneath the rock - it is an unusual sensation to feel the water thundering beneath your feet. The falls occur where the Zambezi riverbed changes from Kalahari sand to the basalt dike that makes the Victoria Falls so remarkable and spectacular.
There is exhilarating white water rafting just below the falls, and you can spot elephants drinking from the river.
