There are more than 30 species of mammal in the Victoria Falls area. Vervet monkeys and baboons are frequently seen on the paths leading to the Falls, and the surrounding trees contain plenty of birds.
The Mosi oa Tunya National Park, in Zambia, is only 66 km2, but it is worth a visit. Zebra, buffalo, giraffe, small antelope and elephant are all fairly common, and the reserve also contains what are probably Zambia's last remaining white rhino. There are no predators, so the wildlife is relaxed, allowing for excellent photographic opportunities.
Catch-and-release fishing is a popular pastime in the Upper Zambezi River. The river is home to 39 species of fish below the falls and 89 species above, showing just how effective Victoria Falls is as a barrier.
The river above the Falls is also home to large pods of hippo, and crocs can frequently be seen basking on the banks.
