The environment around Victoria Falls is incredibly interesting, as the spray from the Falls supports a dense fringe of riverine vegetation, despite the almost total lack of rain.

This forest contains some rare plant species and a number of smaller mammals including warthog, vervet monkeys and bushbuck.

Two relatively small national parks overlap at Victoria Falls: Zambia's Mosi Oa Tunya National Park, and Zimbabwe's Victoria Falls National Park. Together these nature reserves conserve the natural beauty of Victoria Falls and its surrounds.

Further away from the Falls the environment quickly becomes hot, dry and wild. When walking along the footpaths in Victoria Falls National Park, it is common to have lush forest on one side and dry miombo woodlands on the other - an unusual combination.

Wild animals use the railway lines as a highway and elephants wander across the sweltering golf course.
