Livingstone town is named after missionary and explorer David Livingstone, and is located about 10km from the Falls. Known as the tourism capital of Zambia, the town is probably better oriented towards visitors than anywhere else in the country.
Until recently the town of Livingstone often remained unseen. However, political problems in Zimbabwe have led to an influx of tourism on the Zambian side of the Falls, and there is a pervading feeling of change and optimism in the air.
Relatively compact, with around 140 000 local inhabitants, Livingstone is easy enough to walk around.
Sections of the main street, Mosi-oa-Tunya Road, are lined with classic colonial buildings whose Victorian architecture make for an enjoyable and scenic stroll. If you'd prefer to see the town by taxi, look for the official ones, which are blue with red number plates.
If you're in town, the Livingstone museum is worth a visit. It is the oldest museum in Zambia, and contains many interesting displays including a collection of David Livingstone memorabilia.
