River cruises on the Upper Zambezi last from a couple of hours to a number of days. The most popular are two- to three-hour sunset cruises a few kilometres upstream of Victoria Falls, where the river is still broad and sluggish.

You can go on a small, period-style boat or larger cruise vessel. It's easy enough to spot crocs and hippos in the water, as well as wildlife coming down to drink.

However, with a complimentary bar and tasty snacks on offer, these cruises are often more about spending time on the legendary Zambezi River with drink in hand, watching the swaying palms and soaking up the peaceful atmosphere.

Another option is to drift along in a canoe. You don't even have to paddle; just sit back and watch the scenery slide by. Canoes are silent and easily manoeuvrable, allowing you to get really close to animals on the river bank.

Of course you don't want to get too close to a submerged hippo, but that's why you have an experienced river guide paddling for you.
