It might not be the highest nor the widest waterfall, but Victoria Falls boasts the largest sheet of falling water in the world. And for sensory impact, it's hard to beat.
During the wet season from April through May, when the mighty Zambezi is raging, over 500 million litres of water pour over the edge every minute, throwing spray several hundred metres into the air.
It is said that a good soaking in the spray of the Zambezi gives you both physical and spiritual purification. Legend has it that this is most effective if you're naked at the time. While we wouldn't recommend wearing nothing at all, do be prepared to get wet when viewing this acclaimed World Heritage Site.
Victoria Falls actually comprises five separate waterfalls: Devil's Cataract, Main Falls, Horseshoe Falls, Rainbow Falls, and Armchair Falls. The total width of these individual falls is 1.7 kilometres and the highest point is Rainbow Falls, at 108 metres.
If you have the time it's well worth viewing Victoria Falls from both Zimbabwe and Zambia. On the Zambian side you can view the Falls from upstream and downstream, while the Zimbabwean side gives you a better view of the Main Falls.
In the dry season Victoria Falls views are definitely better from Zimbabwe, as not much water flows over the Zambian side.
