1. Fall for the 'Smoke that Thunders'

Everybody who has seen Victoria Falls has their favourite viewpoint. Few other waterfalls allow such a close approach on foot and, what's more, you can see virtually the whole width of the Falls face-on, from the opposite lip of the gorge.

Paths wind in and out of mist soaked rain forest, opening suddenly into clearings with incredible views. Stand upstream on the banks of the Zambezi, hike down into the gorge, or take to the air in a helicopter or microlight.

Flying above Vic Falls is a real highlight; from the air you can truly appreciate the monumental scale of the Falls, and snap some outstanding photos.

2. Adrenalin Highs

Over the Falls, across the gorge, down the rapids, flying, zipping, plunging, tumbling ... this really is an adventure lover's playground.

One of the major drawcards is thrilling white water rafting down a series of world-class rapids, a real white-knuckle adventure.

Other favourites include the world's third-highest bungy jump, which comes with a high scream factor and instant bragging rights. If head-first is not your style, you may prefer to fly like a superhero across Batoka Gorge attached to a zip wire with the river far below.

Then there's the gorge swing, abseiling, rap jumping and one of the longest zip-line rides in the world.

With an Adventure Pass (which costs around US$170, and works out to a saving of about US$60), you can take your pick of any two thrilling activities - white water rafting, canoeing, an elephant ride, high wire adventure, helicopter flip, jet boat spin, horse riding, lion encounter, walking safari or a night drive - and enjoy a sunset cruise.

3. Watch the Sunset - Colonial Style

Vic Falls has a number of sunset spots that are second to none. Enjoy a gentle sundowner from any one of the great Victoria Falls accommodation options.

On the Zambian side, watch the sun sink over the river from the comfort of a wicker chair on the beautiful deck at The Royal Livingstone. Relax into this ringside seat, looking out over the Zambezi and plume of spray above the Falls, as zebras wander across the hotel lawns and vervet monkeys play in the trees.

Across the river, in Zimbabwe, you can drink in the history and elegance of the Victoria Falls Hotel in its spectacular setting overlooking the gorge and railway bridge. For almost 100 years celebrities and royalty have enjoyed the view from this famous landmark.

Stanley's Terrace and Cocktail Bar is still a popular meeting point for high tea or sundowners, and a lavish way to end the day.

Alternatively you could watch the sunset from the 19th hole at the Elephant Hills Intercontinental after a round of golf on African fairways. Crocodiles add to the water hazards.

4. Float Downriver

Above the Falls the Zambezi flows at a leisurely pace, and boat trips above the Falls are as relaxing as the raging rapids below are thrilling.

Exploring the river with binoculars in one hand and a drink in the other, brings with it a sense of calm and contentment. For a bit of old world elegance, try the ever popular sunset cruise on board a riverboat or, for a crocodile-eye view, take to the waters in a two-man canoe.

5. Seek Out the Wildlife

Combine your trip to the Falls with a bit of game viewing. Mosi Oa Tunya National Park is a sanctuary for what are probably Zambia's last remaining rhino. While in the park, keep an eye open for elephant, giraffe, zebra, warthog and various species of antelope.

A short drive from the Falls on the Zimbabwean side, the Zambezi National Park has 40km of river frontage, with Ilala palms and wallowing hippos. Explore this beautiful area on a game drive, horseback safari or walking safari.
