Fall for the 'Smoke that Thunders'

Everybody who has travelled to Victoria Falls has their favourite viewpoint. Few other waterfalls allow such a close approach on foot, what's more you can see virtually the whole width of the Falls face-on, from the opposite lip of the gorge.

Paths wind in and out of mist-soaked rain forest, opening suddenly into clearings with incredible views. Stand upstream on the banks of the Zambezi River, hike down into the gorge, and take to the sky on a helicopter or microlight flight.

Take In the Best Sunset Views

Victoria Falls travel gives you the chance to experience a number of sunset spots that are second to none. Enjoy a gentle sundowner from any one of the great Victoria Falls accommodation options.

Relax into a ringside seat on the deck at The Royal Livingstone, in Zambia. From the comfort of a wicker chair, visitors gaze out over the Zambezi and plume of spray above the Falls, as zebras wander across the hotel lawns and vervet monkeys play in the trees.

Across the river, in Zimbabwe, we'd recommend the elegant Victoria Falls Hotel. For around 100 years celebrities and royalty have enjoyed the view from this famous landmark; today Stanley's Terrace and Cocktail Bar is still a popular meeting point for high tea, as well as a lavish way to end the day with sunset cocktails.

Play in Africa's Adrenaline Capital

Over the Falls, across the gorge, down the rapids ... flying, zipping, plunging, tumbling: Victoria Falls travel transports you to an adventure-lover's playground.

One of the major drawcards is thrilling whitewater rafting down a series of world-class rapids, a real white-knuckle adventure. Other favourites include the world's third-highest bungee jump, which comes with a high scream factor and instant bragging rights, and taking to the skies with a microlight flight.

Or what about gorge swinging? Or abseiling? Or rap jumping? Or ... you get the picture.

Float Down the Zambezi River

Above the Falls the Zambezi River flows at a leisurely pace, and river cruises are as relaxing as the raging rapids below are thrilling. Exploring the river with binoculars in one hand and a drink in the other, brings with it a sense of calm and contentment.

Add a feeling of old-world elegance to your Victoria Falls travels, with the ever-popular sunset cruise on board a riverboat. If you're looking for something a bit more adventurous; take to the waters in a 2-man canoe for a crocodile-eye view of the mighty Zambezi.

Go On Safari

A Victoria Falls safari holiday wouldn't be complete without some big game viewing. Mosi Oa Tunya National Park is a sanctuary for what are probably Zambia's last remaining rhino, as well as elephant, giraffe, zebra, warthog and various species of antelope.

A short drive from the Falls on the Zimbabwean side, the Zambezi National Park has 40km of river frontage, with Ilala palms and wallowing hippos. Explore this beautiful area on a game drive, horseback safari or walking safari.

Our guide handed me another drink as we drifted down the Zambezi River. Our group was divided between four canoes. Being on holiday, we weren't expected to do anything as strenuous as paddle ourselves. Instead, we simply sat back in comfort and watched the river slide by - Sandra Mallinson, 48 Hours in Victoria Falls (Aug. 2007)
