The local Batonga people named Victoria Falls Mosi- Oa-Tunya, the 'Smoke that Thunders', an apt name considering the huge plume of spray thrown high into the sky, as the broad, sluggish Zambezi River crashes over a precipice, into a narrow gorge.

David Livingstone renamed the Falls after his queen, although the rather tame Victoria Falls title is a little bit of a misnomer and somehow doesn't do justice this juggernaut of nature.

Our Victoria Falls travel guide gives more insight the history of how the Falls were formed, and when they were first viewed by David Livingstone, as well as the languages spoken by local people, on both sides of the Falls.
