Victoria Falls Town was built for tourism. It all started in the 1960s, when the tourist potential of this destination was recognised, and shops and services started springing up within walking distance of the Falls.
Until the political problems of 2001, Victoria Falls town was a thriving tourist centre and the undisputed adrenalin capital of Africa. Then business crashed as visitors chose to stay in their hotels and not venture into the town centre.
Despite Zimbabwe's volatile political climate Victoria Falls town is a safe destination, made even more so by the specially appointed tourism police patrol.
Local people are less affected by political problems than the rest of Zimbabwe, and business is on the upswing as visitor numbers are on the slow and steady rise.
