Cash is the order of the day, and many currencies are accepted (waiters carry around calculators for impromptu exchange rate calculations). The most popular currency is probably the US dollar, but the Zambian kwacha and the British pound are also readily accepted.

Carry travellers' cheques to be safe - you'll be able to exchange them for cash without too much trouble.

Black-market money changers are everywhere. Whatever you do, do not exchange currency on the black market. Not only is it illegal, but you are highly likely to be left with a pile of carefully trimmed newspaper.
