The geography of Victoria Falls
As you can see on our map of Victoria Falls, this magnificent 'Natural Wonder of the World' is located on the Zambezi River - on the border of Zimbabwe and Zambia.
Above Victoria Falls, the Zambezi has a slow and sluggish course, dotted with numerous tree-covered islands. Below the Falls you can clearly see the river narrows dramatically, forming the zig-zagging Batoka Gorge.
Just below Victoria Falls, the map also shows the Railway Bridge (commissioned by Cecil John Rhodes in 1990). Linking Zimbabwe and Zambia, this bridge is the launch point for the hair-raising 110m bungee jump, and provides magnificent views both of the Falls and down into the sheer-sided gorge.
The closest towns are Livingstone in Zambia (named after the famous explorer Dr David Livingstone) and Victoria Falls Town in Zimbabwe. Most of the accommodation close to the Falls is not in the towns, but dotted along the banks of the Zambezi River.
The map also shows the Mosi Oa Tunya Park, stretching for about 12 km along the Zambian side of the Falls.
