Previously known as Barotseland, the Western Province consists of six districts.
The landscape is dominated by the Zambezi River flood-plain, which extends from the northern provincial border all the way south to the Sioma Falls. This flood-plain, which can reach 120 kilometres in width, is covered with water from December to June, and serves as a giant reservoir for the waters of the Zambezi.
The Lozi people are the main ethnic group of this region, and can also be found in parts of Namibia, Angola, and Botswana.
