Victoria Falls: The Smoke that Thunders

As it plunges over a 2km wide cliff into the twisting Batoka Gorge, the Zambezi River in full flood sends clouds of drenching spray into the air above Victoria Falls. Spend time exploring the dripping rain forest that clings to the edge of one of the world's Natural Wonders, and view the Falls from all angles and moods.

Once you've had your fill of the views, hold tight as you descend raging rapids on a white water rafting trip, close your eyes and leap off a bridge with a rubber bungee cord snaking out behind you or take to the skies in a microlight ... if you can't satisfy your adrenaline craving on your Zimbabwe travels, chances are you never will.

There is a great selection of Victoria Falls accommodation to choose from; if you want to be close to the action we'd recommend Ilala Lodge, just a short walk from the Falls.

Go on Safari in Big Game Country

Head off in the chill of dawn on game drives through the rugged and beautiful Hwange National Park, known for its large herds of elephant and buffalo, as well as rare species like sable antelope and the African wild dog. Visitors also have a good chance of seeing lion, and white rhino have recently been reintroduced.

Try a dry season trip when the waterholes are surrounded by thirsty animals, or a rainy season safari to chalk up some of the 400 species of birds. The park is easily accessible with many well-established lodges, and has a good network of roads.

We'd recommend staying in Little Makalolo, a tented camp which has recently been completely rebuilt and has luxurious tents overlooking a much-visited waterhole.

Catch a Tiger on the Zambezi River

Even those who've never really considered fishing to be something they'd enjoy, are sure to have great fun fighting the legendary tiger fish.

Stay in a luxurious thatched chalet at Ruckomechi Camp in Mana Pools National Park, and spend your days on fishing trips on the Zambezi River, as well as game drives and guided bush walks.

Of course tiger fishing isn't restricted to Zimbabwe travels; we'd also recommend Kasaka River Lodge, on the Zambian side on the river, and Ichingo River Lodge on the banks of the Chobe River in Botswana.

Walk or Canoe in the Wild

Zimbabwe travel gives you the chance to walk on the wild side. Mana Pools, a World Heritage Site spread across the forested banks and open grasslands of the Zambezi River, is one of the least developed national parks in southern Africa.

We'd recommend setting out on the Mana Pools Canoe and Walking Safari - elephant look a lot bigger from the vantage point of a 2-man canoe! You'll also paddle past hippos and crocs, and are likely to see buffalo and maybe even lion on the riverbanks.

It's definitely the best way to explore this untouched wilderness area.

I tried a confident smile, which quickly turned into a scream as I hurtled, yes hurtled, through the air. Being one of the longest 'foofie slides' in the world, I eventually ran out of breath, stopped screaming, and started enjoying the ride. It was an incredible rush - Sandra Mallinson, 48 Hours in Victoria Falls, Aug. 2007.
