Bulawayo is the second largest city in Zimbabwe with a very laid-back air befitting an oasis town on the edge of the deceptively wooded Kalahari. Used mainly as a resupply venue when heading north to Hwange National Park and Victoria Falls, the wide, tree-lined streets and suburban lawns belie the fact that Botswana is just over the border.
Bulawayo means 'Place of the Killing' in Sindebele, the indigenous language of the area, and is built on the site of the kraal of Ndebele king Lobengula. The majority of the population are Ndebele's and are decendants of the Zulu's in South Africa who settled the area in the 19th century.
Many visitors head for the world heritage site of Matobo Hills to see the balancing rocks, Rhodes' grave and Bushman paintings of this area of astounding natural beauty, thankfully protected by the Matobo National Park.
