Chitungwiza was formed from the union of three townships - Seke, Zengeza, and St Mary's - in 1978. Located about 15km south of Harare, it is the third largest and the fastest-growing population centre in Zimbabwe, with a population of about 320,000.
Most of Chitungwiza's population commute - with difficulty - to work in Harare, but a small industrial park and retail shops create some employment locally. The town council is dominated by the opposition Movement for Democratic Change.
Chitungwiza hasn't much by way of tourist attractions, and it's only worth a visit as a dubious base for travelling in the region, though why you'd choose to stay here and not in Harare proper is anyone's guess.
