The town of Kariba Heights suggests that a lesson was learned from the unruly river. It is carefully situated 600 metres above the lake up a steep hill which follows ancient elephant paths. The route is still well trod by the world's largest land mammal and you could well find yourself side-stepping mounds of elephant dung on your way to the bank. The straggly collection of shops and roadside crafts fail to live up to Kariba's reputation as a Zimbabwean Riviera.
