My Recent Travels
Since joining Go2Africa, I have had the wonderful opportunity to travel to Sun City, the Pilanesberg, the Waterberg and Madikwe Game Reserve, and to experience some of the incredible lodges that we sell. On my most recent overseas trips, I visited Budapest in Hungary, Novi Sad, Serbia, and The Netherlands, where lots of my family live. I enjoyed my first-ever northern hemisphere Christmas in The Netherlands, and visited the German Christmas markets in Aachen and Cologne.
Originally from Cape Town, my family and I moved to a little farm in the Overberg mountains, between Hermanus and Cape Town, when I was 11. After completing my schooling, I went on to study in Stellenbosch, where I took full advantage of the surrounding Winelands! After graduating, I decided to explore my travelling options, and I joined the cruising industry for a gap year, following my passion, photography, and managing the onboard photo gallery. My ‘gap year’ turned into five years, and I worked and travelled aboard Disney’s cruise ships, exploring nearly 40 countries on my adventures. Following this I spent a year in Europe and South Africa, during which time I decided that Africa is truly where I belong.
Where have I travelled
Being brought up in a family that loves to travel, I spent many a family holiday road tripping through Southern Africa, exploring South Africa, Namibia, Botswana and Zimbabwe and being lucky enough to have visited Victoria Falls twice. In South Africa, I’ve visited the Kruger National Park and the nearby Blyde River Canyon, the Drakensberg mountains, Addo Elephant National Park and the Eastern Capecoast, the West Coast National Park in flower season, as well as the Karoo up to the Augrabies Falls.
While working on cruise ships, in between working hours, I spent five years exploring the islands of the Caribbean, the beautiful port cities of France, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Greece and Croatia in the Mediterranean, the Baltic Sea to Copenhagen, Stockholm, Helsinki, Tallinn and St Petersburg, the beautiful Norwegian Fjords and even Iceland! I’ve also travelled to Peru, where I visited a bucket-list highlight, Machu Picchu.
What I love about Africa
We’ve all heard it: ‘East, west, home is best’. For me, even if Africa wasn’t home, it’d probably still be the best! Africa is beautiful and it is vast. We have space to move and space to think. On safari, I love the magic of not knowing what we may encounter or what moment we might witness. I like that we live close to nature – even in a big city like Cape Town, one can escape the city and be walking on a mountain path within minutes. We can sit on a beach and watch the sun set – all within 10 minutes of leaving a working day behind. We also have amazing food, incredible people and a zest for living life. There is a well-known quote that goes, ‘The only man I envy is the man who has not been to Africa, for he has so much to look forward to.’ And we are lucky enough to live here!
Some African Travel advice
Keep your camera on you – you never know what you might see; and always have lip balm… and a jacket, just in case.
