Overview of Echo

Antarctica

Outer space and Antarctica—two frontiers synonymous with exploration and adventure—come together at Echo, a luxury camp inspired by the early days of space exploration. Designed by White Desert, Echo base offers an experience that feels like stepping onto a space station but set amidst the vast ice sheets of Antarctica. As White Desert puts it, “Echo is as close as you can get to feeling like you're off the planet without leaving Earth,” making this camp a truly unique destination.

Sustainably constructed to be dismantled at the end of each season, Echo features domed pods powered by solar energy and luxurious accommodation ‘Sky Pods'. The sleek, futuristic exterior design pays homage to the original space station, while the interiors provide exceptional comfort and modern amenities. The camp is open during the Antarctic summer, from mid-November, and offers a range of activities to suit all adrenaline levels. You can try your hand at ice climbing, abseiling, fat-biking, mountaineering, and touring the surroundings on adapted sleds. If you travel early enough in the season, you can witness over 14,000 emperor penguins with their young chicks and marvel at the beautiful commotion of this annual gathering.

Ideal for exclusive use by families or groups of friends, Echo is perfect for adventurers seeking to explore this wild continent in style. The experience pairs well with a South African safari, as guests fly directly to Antarctica from Cape Town, combining two extraordinary journeys into one unforgettable adventure ticking off two major bucket-list experiences – an African safari and Antarctic exploration.

Sky Pods

Designed to withstand the extreme conditions of Antarctica, the Sky Pods at Echo are both resource-efficient and exceptionally comfortable. Measuring just over 5 metres (17 feet) in diameter, each pod is spacious and thoughtfully equipped with a cosy lounge area, a plush bed—configurable to king or twin—and an en-suite toilet and washroom.

The dome-shaped pods feature a floor-to-ceiling window section, offering breathtaking views of the ice and distant mountains. Guests can also marvel at the unique Antarctic summer nights, where the sun lingers just above the horizon without fully setting. When it’s time for a restful sleep, the pods are thoughtfully designed to block out light, ensuring a dark and comfortable retreat at night.

Due to the complexities of plumbing in such an icy environment, a dedicated shower pod is available, where guests can enjoy the luxury of a hot, refreshing shower amidst the Antarctic wilderness.

General Facilities

Echo's main camp is thoughtfully designed with a series of interlinked pods, allowing guests to move between spaces without braving the outdoor elements. The guest areas include a welcoming library lounge pod with expansive windows, a communal dining pod where gourmet meals are shared, and an art-deco-inspired bar and lounge pod perfect for gathering and sharing stories of the day's activities and experiences. Additional pods house the kitchen and a central shower pod, offering luxurious amenities with stunning mountain views.

For adventurous spirits, Echo provides a wide range of activities supported by all the necessary gear. You can explore the ice sheets on fat-wheel bicycles, scale glacial walls with ice-climbing equipment, or cruise the frozen expanse on a snow tour. The camp also equips you for mountaineering expeditions, including summiting a nunatak peak and embarking on ice treks to experience Antarctica as the early explorers did. Echo perfectly balances comfort and exploration, making it an unparalleled destination for those seeking adventure at the south end of the Earth.

Dining

Dining at Echo is a celebration of fine dining in one of the most remote settings on Earth. A dedicated chef crafts sophisticated yet unpretentious meals using premium produce sourced from South Africa. Each dish is plated or individually served in fine-dining style, ensuring every meal is as refined as it is satisfying. Adding a comforting touch, all breads are freshly baked on-site, and coffee is freshly brewed to ensure you don't miss out on a delicious daily caffeine fix.

Complementing the cuisine are signature cocktails served at the bar and an exceptional selection of fine wines from South Africa’s renowned Cape Winelands. This thoughtful pairing of flavours and craftsmanship transforms each dining experience into a luxurious highlight of your Antarctic adventure.
